Question:

Hi Don,

1) We have a 2.5 year old house and we are getting mould around the windows. What can we do to prevent this and throughout the house.
Would installing a humidifier into the furnance help? Do you even recommend that we have the humidifier install at all.

2) Not sure if this question goes to you...Is it true that pouring foundation during the winter (colder months) has higher problems with the home foundation in the future? We are in the process of purchasing a brand new home and wanted to inquire since our current home has foundation problems and was hoping not to make the same mistake twice.

3) Are there HVAC for homes? What are the benefits? We don't know what is required to have clean air circulate throughout the house and filter the bad ones out? Someone mentioned HVAC but not sure the cost and if that was necessary.

4) Do you know of a reputable a home inspector?

Thank you in advance!
Allison

Answer:

Allison,
1)It sounds like excessive humidity, a humidifier will not help with that. A mechanical ventilation system HRV (Heat Recovery Ventillator) or ERV (Energy Recovery Ventillator) would be the unit to combat excessive humidity.
2)I cannot answer that question.
3)I think you are inquiring about HRV and ERV's. They both remove bad air from the home, HRV's are used in the heating season, where ERV's can be used all year. They both come in Simplified or Dedicated versions. Simplified uses existing duct work to remove the bad air, mostly used in retrofit applications. Dedicated uses specfic duct runs to remove bad air from those rooms that create it. Price on these units varies depending on model and size of home. Speak with your builder about pricing. Our units ERV dedicated 3200 HRV Dedicated 2600.
4) I do not have a recommendation for a home inspector.
