Question:

I saw an ad for a wood-fired hot tub in a magazine. The idea intrigued me and I wonder how efficient that type of furnace is. Home Show

Answer:

Great question, I’m not sure what line you were looking at although I’ll give you a basic run down on the product in general. Wood-fired hot tubs are built as soaker tubs only. A soaker tub allows for the benefits of warm water. However the comfortable seating and added therapeutic value of massaging jets targeting particular muscle groups are lacking. . The way it works is a fire is kindled in the bottom of the stove. The sliding door is positioned to allow air to shoot down the "snorkel tube" air intake, and a roaring draft starts immediately up the chimney. Water circulates through the heat exchange tubes and around the submerged stack and stove body. Once the desired temperature is attained, the draft is simply reduced and the water stays hot for hours. To keep the heat consistent and have the tub ready at any time are almost impossible. The key to efficiency is holding the heat once the water is heated making the insulation and cover very important elements with regard to efficiency. Continuous horse powered motors and low circulating pumps are also essential contributors to efficiency. 97% of all hot tubs are heated through electricity and regardless of how the water is heated electricity is needed to run the pumps (and therefore jets). Overall for long term enjoyment, satisfaction and benefit pursue comfort, quality, integrity, history, and energy efficiency. One thing for sure is that it will be the best thing you’ve ever bought and it will change your life.
