Question:

Are you aware if it is necessary to get a permit for putting a hot tub in your back yard in Ottawa? I was told the only restriction was that it had to be 4 feet from either fences or the house. Can you clarify? Thanks

Answer:

Hi there, Yes, I am aware that a hot tub permit is needed. I will explain it to you as I understand it. If you need further clarification I'd be happy to confirm my knowledge with the city. The concern is that a hot tub is more than 24 inches of water and electricity has to be installed, therefore the city would like to know that everything will be installed to code. Of course you should be using a registered electritian. The fact that it is 24 inches of water leads to another often needed installation of fencing (with it's own set of requirements). Some hot tubs have lockable covers and letters proving they have passed safety testing, eliminating the fence requirement. I know that the letter for Beachcomber's covers is accepted easily elsewhere in Canada and often in the Ottawa Area. Although, even with accepted lockable covers, a fence is obviously the ideal and safest route. Companies selling products for the home often take for granted that people may not know this. Some communities are more sensitive than others for distance allowances, etc and should be checked individually. I have also heard that a number of home owners knowingly avoid getting permits, I'm guessing to avoid the cost attached. I hope this helps you, if I can help you any further please don’t hesitate to email again or contact us at the Award Winning Artistic Group, 2739 Carp rd., 831-5559. Kerri Brooks-Richard
