Question:
Mr. Foundation,
We have lived in our 35yr old house for 6 years and have recently eliminated the root cause of a basement water leak --- adding a chimney cap. The previous lack of the chimney cap allowed water to enter the chimney, pool at the bottom, and eventually flow through the old (oil furnace) cleanout door accessible from our basement furnace room. The problem is how to deal with the wall now. It has a noticeable "ring" around the trap door in a 2' radius and the concrete surface within the ring flakes off to the touch. Now that the water problem is fixed can I leave it alone? If not, what options do I have to repair this wall area...as I want to eventually cover it with an insulated stud wall.

Answer:
You should monitor the problem before you stud the wall just to makr sure no water is continuing to leak, if this is the case just stud and drywall over the area, thank you for your question.
