Question:

I live in an old house with a very cold kitchen floor in the winter. It is so cold that if we leave a bag of oranges beside the fridge on the floor - they will be frozen by morning. Beneath the kitchen floor we have a very small crawl space, too small for an adult to access. Is there an insulation solution for this type of problem - maybe something that can be sprayed in? I've even looked into having a basement put in underneath - but no contractors seem to want to touch this job. Can you recommend a solution or a contractor? We are located in Pembroke Ontario, about 1.5 hours west of Ottawa. On the other side of the kitchen - we have a rec room - which was previously the garage converted to a rec room. We need to run a heat duct under the kitchen floor to this rec room, but it seems no contractor will take on this job either- because it's a small, dirty, pain in the neck job. I was tempted to buy a whole new furnace - I would just specify that we have to have heat to the rec room as part of the contract. Any sugestions or recommendations??? Also - a friend of mine heard about a treatment for basement cement floor on your program to reduce the dust coming from the floor, did you recomend a turpentine and pine tar solution - and if so can you give us the recipe please, how soon afterwards can this cement be painted? Great show Bye for now Louise

Answer:

The best thing to do is to put a proper foundation under the kitchen, We will be happy to look at some E-mail pictures and I can give you a quote based on that. As for a floor sealer use a proper concrete floor sealer such as thompsons water seal which is available almost anywhere, thank you for your question. Patrick LeCours
