Question:
Hello, I will be siding my home this year. It's a 4-level split with 8" redwood siding that has been painted over a few times by previous owners. It's an older house (60's era), and was built with a 2 x 4 constructed exterior walls. The diverse weather has caused the paint to bubble and peel and re-painting is not an option without sandblasting first. Naturally, I'm not going to do that because of the cost and the paint will blister and peel again anyways. My question is: I know it is not adviseable to side without removing the old siding first, but I want to keep the old siding on for insulation purposes. Can I just re-side over the existing and what pitfalls may I encounter?
Thank you.
Answer:
I have reviewed your request and offer the following recommendations. There is virtually no insulation value in wood siding. Therefore:
1. Remove existing siding.
2. Install Cel-Lok metal furring strips vertically over the exterior wall sheathing.
3. Install Cel-Lok extuded polystyrene insulation between the furring strips which has an R value of 10.
4. Install vinyl siding secured to furring strips.
