Question:
I am revnovating the second storey of a storey and half.
The slping part of the ceiling where the roof is on teh other side was not induslated well. The roof rafters are 2x5 so there is not a lot of space if i leave an air channel. What is the best approach to fixing this. I have removed the gyprock and old fiberglass (2.5 inch compressed where it was installed laterally and crossed teh rafters)
The rest is sort of standard.
Answer:
The most insulation I can place in that sloping part is an R12-3.5" fiberlgass batt to still maintain air flow. The other option is to create an unvented attic which would be completely enclosed, this is more diffcult to accomplish not nowing what I am fully looking at. If we were to do that then R18 would be achieve in those 2X5 rafters. Call me if you have any further questions or inquires.
