Question:
We moved into a newly constructed Minto Burnett bungalow with a loft (story and a half house) in March of this year in Ottawa. We had watched the progress of the construction and took pictures showing long icicles hanging from the first and second floors in January. The house faces east and west. All homes had some icicles but ours had the most and the longest - up to 3 feet and on both the front and back of the house. When we complained to the builder, a worker was sent out to knock down the icicles and we were told not to worry.
Our neighbour was present during the construction of their house and observed that insulation had been stuffed in the space in the eaves above the bricks where he believes there should have been air space.
Should the soffits be taken down for inspection to ensure that there are no problems with the design, construction of the eaves and roof, insulation installation, baffles, etc., that could lead to ice damming and buildup on the roof?
Should there also be a detailed inspection from the loft attic? We hired a home inspector who went up a ladder into the loft attic and reported no problems from where he was on the ladder.
Please advise if you ever work for Minto and are in a conflict of interest in this matter.
How much would an inspection of the house cost to check out this possible problem.
Thanks,
Alex and Terry
Answer:
Yes, Comfort Insulation does do work for Minto, We have not done any of the single family homes. We do provide free estimates, but you house is still under warranty from Minto so there is nothing we can do at this point in time. Any concern you may have should be done though Minto within the warranty period.
