Question:
I would like to add insulation to my attic because my house gets very warm in the summer even with the air conditioning on. The house is approx. 27yrs old and has a cottage style roof. It currently has 3in bat insulation but it looks pretty thin. Do I add new bat insulation over top of the old stuff and if so do I run it in the same direction as the old or perpendicular to it.
I am also going to add more roof and soffit venting if possible.

Yes the insulation in attic has to be increase if there is only 3", which is approximatley R12. Current codes require that the insulation in the attic be R32 which is 10" of insulation, R40 is optimal. A less expensive and more effective solution would be be blown fiberglass as it would create a blanket over the whole area.
