Question:
Hi Sam,
I bought a 14 year old house last year (my first home). I have a great deal of moisture build up on my windows, and the house seems quite hard to heat. My father went into the attic one day and said that the blown in insulation is sloped very high on the sides and less deep in the center. The attic has a ridge vent. I have had people say that if the attic isn't ventilated well, it will cause moisture build up and be hard to heat and cool. Is this true, and what do you suggest I do to resolve it? I plan on having the shingles replaced next year as they are very badly curled. Thank you!
Answer:
The insulation in the attic should be evenly distributed throughout the attic, and more importantly it should be well-ventilated also, the air from the soffit should come up and over the insulation via insulation truss baffles. The air in the attic should be consistantly moving to increase the longevity of the shingles and sheathing as well as making the interior of the house a bit more more comfortable and run more energy efficient.
