Question:

Hi, I have a large 60 year-old duplex. My new tenants in the lower apartment just moved in and are complaining that they can hear everything (footsteps, coughing, etc) from upstairs. Is there a quick and clean (as opposed to dirty) way of insulating between the floor and ceiling that would be very effective and not cost prohibitive? Two products have been suggested: Weathershield and Igloo? My questions include, how much noise reduction could I expect, how bad is the damage (re-plastering ceilings, etc) would the tenants have to move out when the work was being done? I read in one of the posts that cellulose is used as a feed for pests? Would such a project cause me more grief than good? Thanks Judy

Answer:

The most cost effective way to insulate those joist spaces would be to used blown cellulose in those areas, it is not the best soundproofing insulation but as far as price and last of messy probably you best bang for the buck. Cellulose is blown in via holes cut into drywall. Sam Marrello Comfort Insulation 613-226-9912
