Question:
Sam, I have an attached brick garage with the masterbedroom over it. The wall between the house and garage is finished, as is the ceiling. The two side walls and the garage door are uninsulated. Will insulating them make any difference to the bedroom over the garage?
Answer:
No it will not. If you are experiencing a cold master bedroom above then the insulation in the garage overhang and its vapor barrier aren't doing their job effectively because it has compremised, therefore not creating an effective air barrier from the outside elements and possibly wasting energy as well due to the fact that the hot air from plenum feeding the drop in the garage is escaping somewhere. A excellent alternative to the regular fiberglass insulated garage overhang would be to effectiely air seal it with a product called Icynene which air seals, therefore no cold air can penetrate the floor beneath. For more information on the product visit Icynene.com or call me at Comfort Insulation 613-226-9912 if you have any question or inquiries
