Question:
Hi there,
I have a preserved wood foundation in my 4 yr old house.
Half of the basement is full finished and the other half is crawl space (about 3 ft ht.). I am trying to determine the most efficient way of keeping the floor above the crawl space warm in the winter. Right now there is some heat being pumped thru ductwork (forced air oil) into the space but I can still feel the difference in temperature on the hardwood floor above when walking over the full basement side to the crawlspace side. Should I be putting batt insulation between the floor joists or is that just defeating the purpose of the forced air heating in there.
Or do I just need to redirect more hot air into that area.
Your thoughts or other suggestions??
Thanks,
James
Answer:
The best way to insulate that crawlspace is to spray Icynene spray foam into the joist spaces and around the rim board. Those 3' walls should be insulated as well. Icynene will stop any air from outside getting into that area, therefore keep you floor warmer. A bonus also if the duct that is running forced air into that room is also covered with Icynene this will also ensure that you are maximizing the amount of heat going into that room.
