Question:

Dear Sir, I live in the Riverside South area, and our home is on a corner lot. Dogs are constantly urinating, etc on our lawn, and the portion of the city lawn property. Can you suggest a cure for this problem without getting the city Bylaw involved. I was thinking of cutting out the lawn portion owned by the city, running across our corner lot and planting some shrubs that our pleasant to look, and easy to maintain, along with red wood chips scatered around the shrugs. Is this a good idea? What type of shrub or plant would you recommend? Our home is of Centenial Red Brick in colour, along with a reddish brown interlock driveway, and front patio. Thanks Very Much! Your help is appreciated. Mario.

Answer:

Hello Being on a corner lot could be a problem in this area. When planting on a corner, it i necessary to not block the view of vehicles/pedestrians approaching the corner. I have seen properties where the sod has been removed and either riverstone or mulch installed and plants have been installed. I have also heard of some city complaints for this change. Besides the visual aspect, the plants have to be far enough back so as not to be damaged by snowplows. Basically you would want low growing evergreens such as andorra juniper or prince of wales juniper. Low growing shrubs would include potentillas or some spireas. There are a lot of perennials that could be used because they die down to the grond in the winter. However, the biggest problem could be the city, depending upon the importance of your corner.
