Question:

I have an area beside my house between 2 ppine trees which faces the north-west. it gets very little sunlight and I can't get grass to grow there. I am hoping to put in a garden area there with a small plant garden and the patio stones and white stone or wood chips. I am planning on putting up a variety of trelisses as a screen from the neighbours. I would like some help in picking out plants for the shaded area -climbing ones if possible. And maybe some help in figuring out how best to turn the other area into a walkable/usable patio type area.

Answer:

There are a lot of perennials that will grow in the shade, such as hosta, bleeding heart, astilbe, ferns, primula, jacob's ladder, solomon's seal, some heuchera varieties, some geranium varieties, and more. Vines that will tolerate some shade include bittersweet, climbing hydragea, and dropmore scarlet honeysuckle, An informal walk/patio could be made out of flagstones. If you need help with a layout, we would have to meet, as I need to visualize things. Sincerely, Martin Fine Fine Landscape & Consulting finelandscapeconsulting@rogers.com
