Question:
Hi Doug,
My wife and I just bought a house with an older security system (Magnum Alert circa 1992) which had its power disconnected when we arrived. We did get a 4 digit security code from the previous owner that activates and deactivates the system. I re-hooked up the system and was able to get it to work except that it periodically checks for a phone line and if it does not find one it activates the alarm. I didn't hook up the phone connection (which looks like a ADSL connector) because I was afraid it would send a signal to the police directly or the old alarm company that used to monitor this system. So my question is: what will happen if I do connect the phone line to the system? Am I in danger of having a SWAT team show up if or when the alarm system goes off? Or will the old alarm company be upset that my system is trying to send them a signal? (I did try to talk to the old alarm company but they seem only interested in me signing up for a monitoring contract) Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
You are right. The phone line can be programmed out of the system, but you would require the programming sheets. If the system is not looking for a phone line, you will not see it show up on the keypad. When you remove the phone line , it becomes a stand alone system.
