Question:
On Sep. 30th I heard a question put to Ren Molner about a house built in 2000 that did poorly on the energuide inspection. He asked how he could prevent cold air from coming into the house when it was -40'C. Ren mentioned a device "Hoi..." something or other that closed off the cold air return when the furnace was not running. Can you tell me what this device is? Our 5-year old furnace was classified as Older and in need of replacement by the Energuide report!
Answer:
In regards to the first part of your question I suggest you contact a heating and air contractor to direct the question to. While I have heard of these I am not at all familiar with the installation or operation. With regards to your 5 year old furnace the evaluator may have been referring to the %efficiency of the furnace (i.e. mid efficient 80%). I have never recommended a replacement of a 5 year old furnace. But I have suggested to my Clients that when the furnace requires replacing that they purchase a high efficiency furnace with a minimum 90% value for improved long term comfort and savings. Remember that the report itself is suggestions and recommendations and you as the homeowner are the one who will decide which recommendations you choose to implement.
