Question:
Hello-not sure if you cover this topic . . .our hydro bills are extraordinarily high. The only thing we can think of that may be increasing our consumption substantially is that we have an old dryer (we bought it second hand so I'm not sure of the age) and we do lots of laundry. Are old dryers known for using up a lot of electricity? Thank you.
Sincerely,Betty Marchington
Answer:
Without knowing more about the home, yes an older dryer that doesn't have an energy star rating will consume more electricity than newer models. The more laundry you do will correlate to an increase in electricity consumption. You can also look at front loading washing machines to improve water usage which may also lower energy consumption required to heat the hot water tank. Please visit www.oee.nrcan.gc.ca/houses to review other possibilities to see if an Energuide for Houses evaluation would benefit your household.
