Question:
Hi Robert, while our house is less than 15 years old and perceived by those who have done work on the house to be well insulated, one of the kid's bedroom on the second floor is sensibly colder than the rest of the house. We changed the window recently as well as confirmed that the return air is working properly and we can't put our finger on the problem.
Is there any hint you can give me on where to look next? The front wall is brick and side wall is vinyl. The unheated garage is not directly underneat this room but anchored to its side wall (maybe the jonction between the garage celining and bedroom floor could be a weak point?
Thanks for your help.
We're located in Cumberland (just 5km East of 10th line)

Answer:
Assuming that the bedroom is located towards or over the gargage the best thing to do is to insulate from the garage. Insulating around the floor joists of the second floor (accessible from the gargage) and then working on insulating the ceiling in the garage around this area. Reality is that any room above an unheated space will always be colder no matter how well insulated it is. You may also wish to caulk/seal around the window TRIM area inside the home with a paintable caulk so you can blend in the colour to match the rest of the room. This will reduce air leakage in this area.
Hope this gives you a start point.
