Question:
Hi Robert.
I have bought used children's furniture that needs freshening up (it is now nicotine yellow :-)) and I'm planning on returning it to white. I have a few scratches to fix too, nothing drastic though. Can I use plastic wood for those and then paint ? Should I sand first ? and then go for oil based enamel primer and then I can use melamine paint over that ? Which is the best melamine paint to buy (i.e. is it worth paying more for Benjamin Moore for example) ? I need something that is child proof, of course...
Thanks a million.
Caroline, Sutton Quebec
Answer:
Hello Caroline,
Sounds like you got a great deal there. There is no problem in using plastic wood to fill the cracks and it is always recommended to sand any and all surfaces before appling new paint. As for the primer.... you seem to know your stuff. An oil based enamel primer is what I would use and recommend. Now for the top coat.... there are many products that can be used but from what I can see you want it to be able to withstand a beating. I would suggest using an oil based paint but a water base would be just as strong. For durability and cleaniness, melamine paint is the way to go and for which kind..... that one I will leave up to you. I am a firm beliver in that you get what you pay for.
Thank you.
