We live in the Brampton area and we are considering a renovation for our home. We have spoken with a few contractors, including my brother-in-law and so far we’ve only gotten vague estimates and so many suggestions and warnings about what to do or not to do that we aren’t even sure if what we are thinking about is practical or possible! We were considering hiring an architect, but we know that would be expensive. Do you have any suggestions, or is there someone you can refer us to help us figure out if a Reno is in our best interest. Thanks

Your in luck, I'm your help. Currently at Sheridan College in Brampton and Milton I run a Renovation Workshop Series designed to help you understand, organize and plan an effective renovation project. I help people just like you navigate the crazy renovation world. To get out of it a project they can be proud of, on time and on budget, while minimizing stresses. Sound Good? Your first issues is you have put the cart before the horse. It is difficult for any contractor to define estimates until they know exactly what you want. And they won't know exactly what you want until you do. You need to define what you NEED, want and would like to include in your possible renovation and discuss those things specifically. Better yet hire them for an hour to gain some input into your plans, then develop a firm project scope before having them back to obtain estimate. An Architect, Designer or Architectural Technologist can be helpful in defining your project but most of the issues and decisions have to be worked through by you. I can help you with that and then you can work with a professional to draw out what you need and produce construction and permit drawings and specifications. You will then be able to compile firm quotes, costs and a comprehension of what work will be needed. I also recommend if your renovation will include any construction work, to review your home as it is and include the work needed to solve any problems, improve maintenance issues and enhance your homes efficiency. This will only the cost effectiveness of your project.
