we are living in the scarborough area in a 1950's two bedroom brick bungalow. We need one more bedroom. Is it more economical to build up or add on the back

I appologize for the delay, we had some issues with my login that are now finally corrected.
Generally speaking IF, your existing foundation has the capacity to support a second floor, then it is more economical to build up. If not, you would need to underpin the entire foundation to support the second floor, so it would be more economical to build out not up. Although some underpinning might be necessary for that addition depending on what you do with the basement of the addition.
Have a home inspector or engineer examine your foundation walls for your current home to determine what exists and calcuate if it will support a second floor. The call an Architectural Technologist in your area to help you with your designs. To find one go to www.AATO.on.ca.
