Question:
Dear Ms. Zagar,
I recently removed the carpet from my living room. The wood floor underneath has been covered for 40 years and is in beautiful shape except that the underpad from the carpet has left an imprint on the floor. I can't believe how shiny the floor is. Is there a way to get rid of the imprint without a total refinish? So far all I have done is damp mop the floor.

Dear Judy
You are lucky to find the floors well in tact.
If the 'imprint' you are speaking of, is a discolouration, there are some hardwood floor cleaning and DIY refinishing products on the market you can try. But if the wood is still shiny it sound like the underpad has left an impression into the wood or the clear finish coat. You would have to speak with a hardwood floor professional to get some advice on how to deal with that more specifically. The only thing I can think of is to sand it down and replace the finish coats.
Remember, once the furnishings are in the room you may not notice it as much as it appears when the room is empty. My best advice is to take some pictures and take them into a hardwood floor professional or retail (try a few to get a consensus as to what can be done) and see what they can suggest.
