Question:
I have a stucco man coming over to do an estimate .We have t1-11 siding.some of which is beginning to rot.He wil replace the rotted wood with equal depth plywood, then cover it with tar paper(roof rap),put on the grate and three coats of stucco.Am I looking for trouble further down the road with this method,as far as moisture is concerned. He has done numerous homes in the area within the past two years, but I'm worried about the long term and the correct method.
Answer:
I appologize for the delay in this response, we had a problem with my login which has since been corrected.
I do not recommend putting stucco over wood. Primarily because wood expands and contracts with the temperature changes and this will put stress on your stucco finish.
There are finishes though that would involve removing the wood, placing insulated surface over the sheething and then placing a specialized stucco finish over the insulated material. This will improve the heating efficiency of your home and look very attractive.
Be sure to deal with someone who has experience with this process. Check out www.durock.com under EFIS (exterior facing Insulated Surfaces)to find out more.
I hope this info doesn't come too late. Good luck
