Question:
how much does an average home gym cost
Answer:
The average depends on what you want to do:
A basic core strength set up with stability balls, simple weights and bands would cost you about $200. If you add a good quality bike or rower and more extensive weights you could expect to add an additional $1500 to $2000 to that. If you are a beginner this should be enough for at least the first year.
You should avoid the trap of buying inexpensive cardio equipment (see my article on "Cardio Equipment -You Get What You Pay For"). A good treadmill or elliptical can cost you anywhere from $2000 up to $6000. Your choice should depend on how heavy you are, how intensely you exercise and how many hours a week your family will use the equipment. Buying a quality treadmill/elliptical machine will keep you running at the least overall cost when you include downtime, repairs and maintenance. Dedicated, serious runners should expect to spend at the top end of that range to get a commercial quality piece of equipment that is stable for high speed running.
If you wanted an extensive weight lifting gym then the minimum you should expect to spend is $5000 and up to about $20,000. You need the walls mirrored to check your form and you will need to put specialized flooring down to protect your floors from dropped weights.
To put together a dream gym,in a large space, with several pieces of excellent quality cardio equipment, multi-station, a great selection of accessories and a stretching station, you could spend up to $40,000 or more. Many new homes are being built with fitness rooms including fantastic home theatres to keep the family from getting bored while working out - this adds to the cost but turns the workout from an obligation to a diversion.
Your home gym should reflect not just your budget but your fitness level, fitness objectives and the space constraints.
