Question:
Hello, we just finished redoing a room in the basement of our very old home (1917), we wanted to put some new simple carpet down but have ran into a big headache. Currently there is a thin layer of tile (likely abestos ) with a thin layer of ugly black carpet glued to it, we wanted to lay some new carpet over top of it but the concrete underneath is too thin to drill through for the carpet tacking around the edge. They are telling us we need to remove everything from the edges and clean it down to the concrete for them to use some special adhesive they have. Do you have any other suggestions..
Answer:
Never never install carpet over existing carpet this causes mould to
grow and creates odour, plus carpet has pile direction and when anything is installed on top it starts to move with the pile direction of the old carpet causing buckling of the new carpet.
Remove the existing carpet put down new specialy designed 2x2 basementfloor panels,you can find them at the lumber store,and install the new carpet.
