Question:

Fifteen years ago I had a rug installed in my finished basement. It was glued to the existing vinyl tiles. (They are 36 years old and might contain some asbestos, although I can't confirm this). The rug has been liften and there is a black glue left on the tiles. What would be the best solution? Should I take up the tiles or should I have a subfloor built and then lay down new tiles. Should a laminate floor be considered? The basement room is finished but it is partially below ground. Any advice you could give me would be appreciated.

Answer:

The tiles contain asbestos for sure.Removal of these tiles is quite a safe operation because the asbestos fibers are locked in the vinyl and they do not fly up like loose fibers. When removing this floor or any constuction product you should always ware a mask, safety glasses, safety boots and gloves.Carpet can be laid over what you have there now but for vinyl or ceramics you will need a new subfloor installed over the existing tiles,Laminates can be installed over existing tiles if they are smooth and flat.
